Hey, we were all confused at 18 but today it’s a very different time and one can get lost easily in social issues and cultural shifts in values and purpose. I particularly love the line “I’m 18 and aching and I don’t know why” This to me is the antithesis of what the Gen Y Gen Z generation is going through at this very moment. Our young people trying to find their own sense of America. This song represents a generation of today’s lost youth, maybe A little entitled, yes, but lost never the less. Mark from Chicago I think this song is a metaphor, wonderfully written and expertly crafted but most importantly this song is more relevant today than it was even in 1968.That makes this one of my favorite songs twice over! If I didn't already love Paul Simon he went ahead and lent his amazing tune to my favorite Prog Rock band and they really honored it. It happens at about 1:44 in and doesn't last long, but once you hear it you never once you hear it every time. If you listen hard during the intro, you can hear Chris Squire playing a bit of the melody from "America" from West Side Story on the bass. Rodgers from Melbourne, FlRegarding the version by YES. Saginaw Michigan in the 60's was a declining industrial city in the middle of rural NOWHERE and is even more deserted now that the automotive industry in Michigan is basically gone. Mary E from Sandusky MichiganHearing that they hitchhiked 4 days from Saginaw Michigan to Pittsburgh really blew my mind because I could not imagine Simon and Garfunkel BEING in Saginaw Michigan and more so that it was enough in Paul's mind to mention it in a song that has been heard all over the world.
